About Highland Park 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Nestled in the Orkney archipelago of Northern Scotland, Highland Park Distillery has been an icon in whisky since its founding in 1798. Celebrated for its remarkably balanced whisky set against its remote and rugged home, the distillery is distinguished by its traditional practices, remaining one of the few in Scotland to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley.
The distillery uses peat sourced from the nearby Hobbister Moor to smoke the barley, imparting a unique, subtly smoky flavor. Under the guidance of Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion, the Highland Park 15 Year Old is crafted with a rich tapestry of aromas and flavors. It opens with the rich warmth of crème brûlée, heather honey, and crumbled cinnamon, followed by vibrant notes of fresh pineapple and sun-kissed lemon zest. Accents of freshly baked sponge cake and toasted cinnamon enhance the profile, while lingering citrus and vanilla notes dance through the peaty smoke.
For the 15 Year Old expression, Gordon Motion carefully selects primarily sherry-seasoned European oak casks for their warm, spicy undertones, complemented by American oak casks that add a balance of sweet vanilla. A few refill casks are also used to refine and mellow the flavors. Bottled at 88 proof, this meticulous curation allows the whisky’s lively fruitiness and distinctive peaty essence to flourish.
About Scotch
Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.
