From the historic Uitvlugt distillery in Guyana, this rum was distilled in 1999, just a year before the distillery closed down for good in 2000. Produced in the distillery’s famed wooden pot still, this expression rested for 26 years in an ex-rum cask, which yielded an outturn of 184 cask strength bottles when it was cracked open by Wealth Solutions for The Colours of Rum collection.

Distillery Information

Uitvlugt (pronounced “eye-flut”) is a village in Guyana, based on the west bank of the Demerara River, however the name is Dutch. Back in the 17th century most sugar cane plantations produced their own rum. The Dutch-owned Uitvlugt Distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden pot stills which produced a heavy style rum. However, in 1975 the government began privatising sugar plantations and distilleries, amalgamating them into one large distillery owned by the Guyana Liquor Corporation, and this sadly saw the close of Uitvglut in 2000. The only remaining distillery in Guyana is the acclaimed Diamond Distillery, which acquired the stills from Uitvlugt.
